304 Stainless Steel Plate Properties: Strength, Corrosion and Selection


304 stainless steel plate is a general-purpose austenitic stainless product selected for its balance of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability and availability. The purchase decision still depends on the governing standard, thickness, finish, forming route and service environment; a grade name alone does not define acceptance.

Quick selection answer: choose 304 plate for general indoor, food-processing, architectural and fabrication service where chloride exposure is limited. For persistent salt spray, seawater, aggressive chemicals or elevated-temperature duty, compare another grade before ordering.

What the Published Properties Mean

Published mechanical values for 304 are not universal design values. Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness vary with the product specification, plate thickness, delivery condition and test direction. A purchase order should cite the applicable standard and edition, not copy a single value from an unrelated datasheet.

Corrosion Resistance Has Limits

304 resists many atmospheric and mildly corrosive environments because chromium supports a passive surface film. It is not immune to pitting, crevice corrosion or stress-corrosion cracking. Chloride concentration, temperature, deposits, crevices, cleaning chemistry and time of wetness can be more important than whether the plate initially looks bright.

304, 304L or 316L?

304L is commonly considered when welding or thermal exposure makes low carbon important. 316L adds molybdenum and is often evaluated for improved resistance to localized chloride attack. Neither substitution should be automatic: confirm the design code, fabrication route and actual medium.

Plate Finish, Flatness and Fabrication

Finish affects appearance, cleanability and subsequent polishing, but it does not replace alloy selection. For laser cutting, bending or machining, specify thickness tolerance, flatness requirement, grain direction where relevant, surface protection and whether acceptance applies to the full plate or the finished blank.
