Heat treatment of 304 stainless steel seamless pipe is primarily used to establish the specified solution-annealed condition—not to harden 304 by conventional quenching. The required cycle depends on the product standard, pipe dimensions, prior cold work and the acceptance requirements.
Seamless pipe production can involve hot working, cold drawing or cold rolling. These operations change the microstructure, residual stress and mechanical properties. A controlled solution treatment followed by sufficiently rapid cooling can restore austenitic structure and reduce susceptibility associated with an unfavorable thermal history.
Heat treatment does not compensate for the wrong alloy, excessive wall variation, surface laps, contamination or unsuitable welding practice. It also does not prove corrosion resistance in a specific medium. Those issues need separate material, dimensional, surface and test controls.
