
ASTM A269, ASTM A213 and ASTM A312 are not interchangeable labels for the same stainless steel product. They address different product forms and service conditions: A269 covers seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service; A213 covers seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes; A312 covers seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service. The correct starting point is therefore the equipment function and governing design code—not only grade, outside diameter or price.
This guide helps purchasing teams and engineers identify the standard that belongs on an RFQ, then define dimensions, grade, testing and documentation without mixing tube and pipe requirements.

Selection note: A tube with the same nominal grade and approximate dimensions as a pipe is not automatically acceptable. Confirm the product specification, applicable edition, design code and acceptance criteria before substitution.
ASTM A269/A269M is commonly considered where the order requires austenitic stainless tube for corrosion-resistant general service, instrumentation, process equipment or other low- and high-temperature duties that fall within the specification and applicable design rules. The active ASTM scope describes nominal-wall-thickness seamless and welded tubing and requires material to be supplied in the heat-treated condition.
Do not assume that “instrument tube,” “bright annealed tube” or “precision tube” fully defines acceptance. These commercial descriptions still need a governing material standard and dimensional requirements.
ASTM A213/A213M is application-specific. Its scope covers seamless ferritic and austenitic steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes. This immediately separates it from a general welded-tube request: the manufacturing route, high-temperature grade condition and test program are central to the specification.
Grades containing an H suffix are controlled differently from corresponding non-H grades because elevated-temperature creep and stress-rupture performance may govern the design. A buyer should not shorten TP304H to “304” or TP316H to “316” on the RFQ. The complete grade, service temperature, tube dimensions and applicable design code need to remain aligned.
Confirm whether the specification is written on minimum wall or nominal wall, whether eddy-current or another nondestructive examination is required, and whether tube-sheet expansion, bending, welding or special cleanliness affects acceptance. Dimensional control should cover OD, wall, length, straightness and end condition; the inspection plan may also include chemistry, tensile properties, hardness, flattening/flaring tests and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric testing as required by the applicable specification and order.
ASTM A312/A312M applies to seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold-worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service. Pipe is commonly purchased by NPS and schedule, although project specifications may state an exact outside diameter and minimum or nominal wall requirement. The order should not use a tube OD/wall convention and a pipe schedule interchangeably without checking the dimensional standard.
For corrosion-resistant process piping, grade selection is only one part of the purchase. The buyer also needs to define manufacturing route, heat treatment, end preparation, surface condition, length, pressure or nondestructive examination, marking and certification. A request for “standard testing” is too vague for critical service. State the material specification and edition, then identify project additions such as positive material identification, intergranular-corrosion testing, ultrasonic or eddy-current examination, surface roughness, dimensional reports or third-party inspection. Product testing can be arranged according to the confirmed specification and inspection scope; results and certificate type should be agreed before production or allocation.
The material test certificate should identify the heat, grade, chemistry, mechanical results and applicable specification. If EN 10204 3.1 documentation, additional traceability or a third-party witness is required, place it on the RFQ rather than requesting it after completion.
