ASTM A276 vs A479 vs EN 10088-3: Which Stainless Bar Standard Do You Need?

ASTM A276, ASTM A479 and EN 10088-3 are important stainless steel bar standards. They may cover similar grades, but their application scope is different.

ASTM A276 is commonly used for general stainless steel bars and shapes. ASTM A479 is intended for bars and shapes used in boiler and pressure-vessel construction. EN 10088-3 is widely used by European buyers for corrosion-resistant stainless steel bars, rods, sections and bright products.

For export orders, the standard is only one part of the specification. Buyers should also confirm the grade, material number, delivery condition, MTC and inspection requirements.

Quick Selection

  • General machining and industrial bars: ASTM A276 is commonly specified.
  • Boilers and pressure-vessel construction: ASTM A479 or ASME SA479 may be required.
  • European industrial projects: EN 10088-3 is frequently specified.
  • Japanese drawings: confirm the applicable JIS grade and product specification separately.

ASTM A276 vs A479 vs EN 10088-3

Item ASTM A276 ASTM A479 EN 10088-3
Main Scope Stainless steel bars and shapes Bars and shapes for boiler and pressure-vessel construction Corrosion-resistant stainless long and bright products
Typical Buyer Machining and general industry EPC, pressure equipment and process industry European industrial buyers
Typical Applications Shafts, pins, rods and machined parts Pressure-related components, valves and pumps Machinery, engineering and corrosion-resistant components
Grade System Grade + UNS Grade + UNS Steel name + material number
Documentation As required by PO Often more project-specific EN 10204 inspection documents are commonly requested

Important: do not replace one standard with another only because the stainless steel grade is similar. The purchase order and project specification should take priority.

ASTM, EN and JIS Grade Reference

International drawings may use ASTM/AISI, EN or JIS designations. The following grades are commonly cross-referenced in purchasing discussions.

ASTM / AISI UNS EN Grade EN No. Common JIS Reference
304 S30400 X5CrNi18-10 1.4301 SUS304
304L S30403 X2CrNi18-9 1.4307 SUS304L
316 S31600 X5CrNiMo17-12-2 1.4401 SUS316
316L S31603 X2CrNiMo17-12-2 1.4404 SUS316L
321 S32100 X6CrNiTi18-10 1.4541 SUS321
Cross-standard note: these grades are commonly compared, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Check the exact chemistry, mechanical properties, delivery condition and product specification before approving a substitution.

How to Check a Stainless Steel Bar MTC

An MTC should be checked against the purchase order. Do not check the grade name only.

MTC Item What Buyers Should Check
Standard ASTM A276, ASTM A479, EN 10088-3 or project requirement
Grade Grade name plus UNS or EN material number
Heat Number Must match the material marking and packing documents
Chemistry Check all grade-critical elements, not only Cr and Ni
Mechanical Properties Verify required tensile, yield, elongation or hardness data
Condition Confirm annealed, solution-treated, aged or other required condition
Certificate Type Confirm whether EN 10204 3.1, 3.2 or another inspection document is required

PMI, UT, hardness testing and third-party inspection may also be required. These are normally defined by the purchase specification. They should be confirmed before production.

Buying Stainless Steel Bar for Europe and the Middle East

European buyers often use EN steel names and material numbers. EN 10204 inspection documents are also common.

Middle Eastern EPC, oil and gas, petrochemical and power projects often use ASTM or ASME specifications. Additional project requirements may also apply.

Buyer Situation Key Point
European machinery project Confirm EN grade, material number, condition and EN 10088-3 requirement
Middle East EPC project Check ASTM/ASME specification plus project-specific inspection requirements
Pressure-related component Confirm whether ASTM A479 or ASME SA479 is specifically required
Cross-standard drawing Do not approve substitution from an equivalent-grade table alone

What Should Be Included in Your RFQ?

A clear RFQ reduces specification errors. Include the following information:

  • ASTM, EN or JIS standard
  • Grade and UNS / EN material number
  • Round, square, hex or flat bar
  • Diameter or section size
  • Length and quantity
  • Delivery or heat-treatment condition
  • Surface finish and tolerance
  • EN 10204 certificate requirement
  • PMI, UT or third-party inspection if required

RFQ Example:

ASTM A479 316L / UNS S31603 stainless steel round bar, Ø40 × 3000 mm, peeled surface, EN 10204 3.1 MTC and PMI required.

FAQ

What is the main difference between ASTM A276 and A479?

ASTM A276 is widely used for general stainless steel bars and shapes. ASTM A479 is intended for bars and shapes used in boiler and pressure-vessel construction.

What is EN 10088-3?

EN 10088-3 is a European stainless steel product standard. It covers technical delivery conditions for corrosion-resistant stainless steel long and bright products within its scope.

Is 316L the same as EN 1.4404?

316L and 1.4404 are commonly cross-referenced. They are not automatically interchangeable for every order. The applicable product standard and purchase specification must still be checked.

Can ASTM material have an EN 10204 3.1 certificate?

An EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate can be requested for an ASTM material order when this documentation requirement is agreed between buyer and supplier.

What should I check on an MTC?

Check the standard, grade, material number, heat number, chemistry, mechanical properties, delivery condition and test results. The heat number should match the supplied material.
