BA Finish vs Mirror Finish: What’s the Difference?


Quick answer: BA (bright annealed) is a smooth, reflective mill finish created by annealing cold-rolled stainless steel in a controlled atmosphere. Mirror finish is produced by mechanical polishing to a much higher reflectivity. BA is usually selected for clean, economical reflectivity; mirror is selected when a near-specular decorative surface is required.

BA and Mirror Are Different Specifications

BA describes a mill-processing route, while “mirror” is a commercial appearance term. A mirror order should define the polishing grade or reference sample, surface roughness where relevant, viewing requirements, protected side and acceptable visual defects. Terms such as No. 8 may be used, but the agreed standard and sample should control.

Selection Risks

Reflectivity varies with alloy, thickness, rolling condition and supplier route. Mirror panels can reveal waviness, polishing lines, weld distortion and handling marks. Protective film type, grain direction, flatness, edge treatment and batch consistency should be agreed before fabrication.

Neither finish alone defines corrosion resistance. Grade selection, fabrication cleanliness, drainage and maintenance control service performance.
