Hot rolled and cold drawn stainless steel flat bars can share the same nominal grade and dimensions, yet deliver different tolerances, surfaces, straightness and costs. Choosing the production route according to the finished component helps buyers avoid paying for unnecessary precision or receiving stock that requires excessive machining.

Hot rolled flat bar is formed at elevated temperature. The process supports efficient production of larger sections and is well suited to components that will be welded, ground or machined after delivery. Surface conditioning can include pickling, shot blasting, grinding or polishing when the mill finish is not suitable for the final use.
Cold drawn flat bar is pulled through a die at room temperature. The additional work improves dimensional consistency and surface appearance, but it can also change residual stress and mechanical properties. If the component will receive substantial machining, discuss straightening and stress-relief requirements with the supplier.
Do not specify only width and thickness. A complete order should define width tolerance, thickness tolerance, straightness, length tolerance, edge shape and permissible surface defects. Sheared, slit, rolled and machined edges behave differently during welding and finishing. Parts used as guide rails or machined blanks may also need parallelism or flatness limits.
Manufacturing route does not replace grade selection. Austenitic grades such as 304/304L are widely used for general corrosion resistance and fabrication, while 316/316L is commonly considered where chloride exposure is more demanding. Duplex, precipitation-hardening and heat-resistant grades require project-specific review of corrosion, strength, heat treatment and weld procedure.
