How to Get a 2B Finish on Stainless Steel


Quick answer: 2B is normally produced at the mill by cold rolling, annealing, pickling and a final light skin pass with polished rolls. It is not simply a hand-polished finish. Fabricators can clean or blend a damaged area, but reproducing uniform mill 2B appearance across a large panel is difficult.

How Mill 2B Is Produced

  1. Hot-rolled material is annealed and descaled.
  2. The strip or sheet is cold reduced to final gauge.
  3. It is annealed and pickled to restore structure and remove scale.
  4. A light cold-rolling pass creates the smooth, low-reflective 2B surface.

Appearance varies with grade, thickness, mill route, roll condition and batch. The product standard defines the finish route, but it may not establish every visual acceptance criterion.

Repair and Fabrication Limits

Grinding or abrasive blending creates a directional mechanical finish and may no longer match 2B. Welding heat tint must be removed with an appropriate procedure. For visible assemblies, agree on sample, grain/rolling direction, protective film, viewing conditions and acceptable variation before production.
