Quick answer: Reliable orbital welding of stainless steel tube depends on more than the welding program. Tube chemistry, end preparation, joint fit-up, shielding and internal purge control, heat input, cleanliness and inspection acceptance must work together. Orbital GTAW improves repeatability, but it cannot compensate for mismatched dimensions, contaminated surfaces or an unstable purge.
Orbital welding is widely used for high-purity, sanitary, pharmaceutical, semiconductor and other tubing systems where consistent root profile and clean internal surfaces matter. Requirements vary by service. For example, AWS D18.1 covers GTAW and plasma arc welding of austenitic stainless steel tube and pipe in sanitary applications and includes manual, mechanized and automatic methods. A project may also impose its own weld procedure qualification, surface finish, inspection and documentation rules.
Before ordering tube, define the applicable material and welding specifications, grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, surface condition, cleanliness level, end preparation and acceptance criteria. “Orbital-weldable” is not a complete material description.
| Variable | Why it matters | What to define |
|---|---|---|
| Grade and chemistry | Influences corrosion performance, weld-pool behavior and procedure qualification | Exact grade/UNS and governing standard |
| OD and wall | Controls heat input, arc position and fit-up consistency | Permitted dimensional variation and ovality |
| Surface finish | Affects cleanability and the required post-weld condition | ID/OD finish and roughness when critical |
| Cleanliness | Oil, particles and residues can contaminate the weld | Cleaning, handling and capped-end requirements |
| Traceability | Links installed tubing to heat and inspection records | MTC, heat marking and record format |
The choice should follow the process fluid, cleaning chemicals, temperature, chloride exposure and applicable code. 316L is often considered where molybdenum-assisted resistance to localized corrosion is beneficial, but no grade should be selected from a generic label alone. Welding does not eliminate the need to evaluate the service environment.
Orbital welding programs assume a repeatable joint. Tube ends should be square, clean and free from burrs that disturb alignment or trap contamination. OD mismatch, wall-thickness variation, ovality, excessive root gap and poor alignment change the heat distribution and root profile even when the programmed current remains unchanged.
Use dedicated preparation tools and prevent contact with carbon-steel contamination. Do not use force to pull a misaligned joint into position and then treat the restraint as normal fit-up. The installation design, supports and tack-welding method must keep the joint stable without introducing avoidable stress.
The external shielding gas protects the arc and weld pool, while the internal purge protects the root side. Inadequate purge quality can produce heavy oxidation and an irregular internal surface, reducing cleanability and potentially affecting corrosion performance. Excessive purge flow can also disturb the weld pool or pressurize the joint.
A qualified procedure should define the gas type and purity, delivery arrangement, purge volume, flow control, venting and the oxygen acceptance level when monitoring is required. The correct limit depends on the applicable specification and desired internal discoloration level; copying a single oxygen value from an unrelated project is not sound engineering practice.
Visual examination should review both the outside and the accessible root surface for alignment, bead profile, oxidation, undercut and other relevant discontinuities. Borescope inspection may be used when direct viewing is limited. Dimensional checks, surface-finish verification, leak testing, pressure testing or additional nondestructive examination should be specified only as required by the service and governing documents.
Weld color is a useful process indicator but is not a complete corrosion qualification. Likewise, a smooth-looking outside bead does not prove that the internal purge or root profile was acceptable. Acceptance must follow the agreed specification, qualified welding procedure and inspection plan.
Review suitable material forms in the stainless steel BA and EP tube range or the broader seamless stainless steel tubing range. Final weldability and acceptance remain subject to the approved procedure and project specification.
