303 stainless steel: prioritize machinability

303 is commonly selected when repeated turning, drilling or automatic machining is the dominant requirement. Sulfur improves chip breaking, but it can reduce corrosion performance and weldability compared with low-sulfur austenitic grades. Confirm that the service environment and joining plan allow this trade-off.

304 and 304L: a general-purpose baseline

304 is a practical starting point for general corrosion resistance, forming and welding. 304L is preferred where lower carbon is important for welded assemblies. For machined parts, the buyer should still state the required condition and surface finish because work hardening can affect tool life and cycle stability.

316 and 316L: chloride and chemical exposure

Molybdenum-bearing 316/316L is considered when chloride exposure or a more demanding chemical environment is expected. Grade selection does not replace a service review: concentration, temperature, crevices, cleaning chemicals and surface condition all influence corrosion performance.

17-4 PH: strength after qualified heat treatment

17-4 PH (UNS S17400) can suit components requiring high strength and dimensional control after heat treatment. State the required condition and heat-treatment route in the RFQ; do not assume that a grade name alone defines the final properties.

Bar Condition Affects Machining Results

Cold-drawn, peeled, centerless-ground and hot-finished bars can differ in surface condition, residual stress, straightness and machining allowance. Ground or peeled surfaces may reduce initial stock variation, while a different condition may be more practical for larger sections. Select the condition against the drawing, chucking method, stock-removal plan and final finish.

Define Tolerance, Straightness and Cut Length

Diameter tolerance should be tied to the actual machining allowance and finished-part datum scheme. Also define straightness over a stated length, end squareness, cut-length tolerance and any centerless-ground or polished requirement. Clear acceptance criteria prevent a nominally correct bar from causing setup variation or excess scrap.
