FAQ |
Q1: What is N850 Nonmagnetic Steel?
A1: N850 is a high-strength austenitic stainless steel specially developed for applications requiring low magnetic permeability (µr ≤ 1.01), excellent corrosion resistance, and good toughness. It is widely used in oil & gas drilling, mining, marine, and defense industries.
Q2: What makes N850 different from 304 or 316 stainless steel?
A2: While 304/316 stainless steels can become slightly magnetic after cold working, N850 maintains stable non-magnetic properties, even after machining or forging. It also provides higher strength and better resistance to chloride-induced corrosion compared with conventional grades.
Q3: What is the standard for N850?
A5: N850 is a commercial grade name commonly used in the oil & gas industry. It does not correspond directly to ASTM/EN grade numbers, but products are usually tested and certified to ASTM A276, ASTM A479, EN 10204 3.1/3.2, and comply with API 7-1 requirements for nonmagnetic drill collars.
Q4: Can N850 be welded and machined?
A6: Yes. N850 offers good weldability (GTAW, GMAW, SMAW processes) and can be machined into complex parts. Solution annealing is recommended after welding to restore non-magnetic properties and corrosion resistance.
Q5: Why should I choose N850 for oil & gas drilling?
A8: Because it ensures accurate downhole survey readings by eliminating magnetic interference, while providing high mechanical strength and superior corrosion resistance in harsh drilling environments.
