How to Specify Welded Wire Mesh Opening

A welded wire mesh enquiry should clearly distinguish clear opening from wire pitch. These dimensions are related but are not the same.

Welded Joint Quality & Grid Stability

The welded intersection is one of the most important quality points of stainless steel welded wire mesh. Consistent welds help the mesh maintain opening dimensions during handling, cutting and further fabrication.

FAQ

What is the difference between welded wire mesh and woven wire mesh?

Welded wire mesh uses resistance-welded intersections to create a rigid and dimensionally stable grid. Woven wire mesh uses interlaced wires and is generally more flexible. Welded mesh is therefore commonly preferred for guards, panels, partitions and fabricated components.

What does clear opening mean?

Clear opening is the free distance between adjacent wires. It is different from pitch, which is measured from the centre of one wire to the centre of the next.

Can welded mesh be supplied with rectangular openings?

Yes. Both square and rectangular welded mesh can be produced. For rectangular openings, specify both opening dimensions and indicate the required orientation if it affects installation.

Should I choose a welded mesh panel or roll?

Panels are normally preferred where rigidity, flatness and further fabrication are important. Rolls are suitable for lighter mesh and continuous coverage. Available roll form depends on wire diameter and mesh rigidity.
